Friday fashion Tip 2

"Happy Friday everyone!

Today I'm going to talk about hair as another key aspect of expressing your personal style.

Hair is just as important to portray your personality, mood and attitude. And however you choose to cut or dye it, there's no right or wrong look.

Oh except for one - if most hair adverts and media are still to be believed.

Grey hair.

Today we're still encouraged to believe grey hairs are something to be ashamed of. Which is a bit strange when you think about it: the average person starts to have grey hairs in their early 30s. So, whilst grey hair is stereotypically associated with older age, you're most likely going to spend more of you life with it than without.

Fortunately, there are more and more women leading the 'silver siren' brigade, with more bloggers advocating going grey, and adverts featuring one silver haired model to cover age diversity (although frankly I see that as tokenism rather that actually embracing women of all ages, but I digress....)

There's no denying these ladies look fabulous. And it's amazing seeing them embrace their natural colour and age, and putting 2 fingers up to our ageist society.

But something interesting has happened as a result. I now hear women telling me they feel shamed into NOT showing their grey hair for fear of being perceived as in denial or even cowardly.

This isn't right. What we should be doing is encouraging women to know they have a CHOICE. If you want to be a silver goddess, be one. If you want to rock a salt and pepper look, do. Or if you feel you personally look better with dyed hair, then continue to colour it.

Whatever you go for, like style, the key is that is needs to be your choice. Not someone else's. If we start to pressurise women into feeling they have to show off their grey, then we're pretty much back where we started.

Over the years I've had people tell me I should dye my hair as its natural shade is 's**t coloured.' I've had ex boyfriends tell me off for putting my hair up or cutting it short. Despite loving how it looked, at the time I felt bad and changed it accordingly . But then my hair stylist said the best thing to me: “if you like your hair, ditch the boyfriend and keep it!”

Now of course it's only natural that we want our loved ones to think we look good. And we want our partners to find us attractive! But the most attractive thing is you, doing you, and feeling good about it.

So ladies. As with your personal style of dressing, I encourage you to consider whether you have a healthy relationship with your hair. Why does it really look as it does? Is it because you chose it or did someone for you, whether it was an individual, the media, or society at large? Your hair plays a key role in telling your visual story, so you deserve to make sure it's true and authentic to who you are right now.

And with that in mind, here are some ladies rocking different hair styles – from silver locks, to highlights, to salt and pepper. And each of them looking gorgeous - because it's right for them.

See you next week!

Best wishes
